Van Key Replacement Manchester
A van without a key is not an inconvenience, it is a day’s work lost. Autobahn supplies, cuts and programmes van keys at the vehicle — at a yard, a job site or the roadside — across Manchester and Greater Manchester.

Why vans are not just bigger cars
It is easy to assume a van uses the same key system as the car it resembles. Often it does not. Manufacturers regularly fit different immobiliser hardware to commercial variants, sometimes because the platform is shared with another manufacturer entirely, sometimes because the commercial model was updated on a different cycle.
The practical consequence is that the model name alone is not enough. The registration is, because it identifies the specific build rather than the badge.
Load area and second locks
Many vans have rear or side door locks that are keyed separately from the ignition, particularly where a previous owner has had a lock replaced. If your ignition key no longer opens the back, that is usually a history problem rather than a fault, and it can normally be resolved.
Worth mentioning when you call: it occasionally means supplying more than one key type.
Keeping downtime short
Send the registration early
Ideally before the van is actually needed. Identifying the system in advance is what makes same-visit completion possible.
Say where the van will be
Yard, customer site, depot or roadside. Access and a place to work matter more with a large vehicle.
Have entitlement ready
V5C and photo ID, or the equivalent for a company or leased vehicle. Sorting this in advance avoids a wasted visit.
Consider a spare at the same time
If you are already paying for attendance, adding a spare while a working key exists is the cheapest it will ever be.
Is it the key or the van?
Before a new van key is made, it is worth two minutes establishing which side the fault is on.
- Spare key starts the van
- The fault is in the main key.
- Neither key starts it, dashboard lights up normally
- Likely vehicle side — aerial, immobiliser module or wiring. A new key would not help.
- Nothing lights up at all
- Battery or electrical supply, not the key.
- Cab opens, load area does not
- The load doors may be on a separate lock or circuit — often a lock issue rather than a key one.
Sending that information with the registration lets us arrive with the right answer rather than the right key for the wrong problem.
Common questions
Why are van keys often more expensive than car keys?
Commercial vehicles frequently use different immobiliser systems from the passenger cars they share a platform with, and the key and programming route can be more involved.
Some vans also have separate locks for the load area, which may or may not share the ignition key.
Can you work on a van with tools and stock inside?
Yes. Most van work happens with the vehicle loaded, because that is the situation the owner is actually in.
If the load area needs opening as part of the job, say so when you call — it occasionally changes the approach.
I run several vans. Can spares be made for all of them?
Yes, and doing it as a batch is usually more practical than one at a time. Each vehicle still needs its own entitlement check.
For fleets, the person responsible for the vehicles needs to be able to provide documentation for each one.
