Transponder Key Programming Manchester
If your key turns the ignition and the engine cranks but will not fire, you are almost certainly looking at a transponder that the vehicle does not recognise. The blade is doing its job; the immobiliser is not satisfied.
How the chip works
The transponder is a passive chip in the key head with no battery of its own. A coil around the ignition barrel generates a field, the chip draws power from it and replies with a coded identity. The vehicle checks that identity against what it expects and permits the engine to run.
This is why a key with completely dead remote buttons will still start the car. The remote needs a battery; the transponder does not.
Why online keys so often fail
The most common disappointment in car keys is a cheap online key that arrives, fits the ignition, turns, and does nothing useful. Two things cause it.
- The wrong chip type. Different manufacturers and eras use different transponder families. A key that physically fits may carry a chip your vehicle has no interest in.
- A used key already locked to another vehicle. Many transponders can only be written once, or cannot be reset once paired.
Neither is visible from a photograph. We are happy to check a listing before you buy — it takes a minute and saves the postage.
What programming involves
Confirm the chip type
Matched to the vehicle rather than to the key’s appearance.
Access the immobiliser
Through the diagnostic port on most vehicles, or on the bench where the system requires it.
Write the key to the vehicle
Adding the new identity to what the immobiliser accepts.
Verify existing keys
Confirming your other keys still work, since some systems re-learn all keys together.
Symptoms that point at the transponder
- The engine cranks but will not fire, while the remote still locks and unlocks the car.
- The engine starts for a moment and cuts out.
- The key symbol or immobiliser light flashes or stays on.
- The car starts on the spare key but not the usual one.
- The fault comes and goes, often after the key has been dropped.
Several of these also appear when the vehicle’s reading aerial or immobiliser module is at fault, which is why a working spare is such useful information: if the spare starts the car, the problem is in the first key.
Where the chip itself has failed, the answer is reprogramming or a new chip. Where only the housing is damaged, the existing chip can usually move into a new key.
Common questions
What is a transponder, exactly?
A small passive chip inside the key head. It has no battery — it draws power from a field generated by a coil around the ignition, and replies with an identity the vehicle checks.
That is why a transponder key still starts the car when the remote buttons are dead: the chip does not need a battery to work.
Why does my car crank but not start with a new key?
That is the textbook signature of a cut-but-unprogrammed key. The blade is right, so the starter turns, but the immobiliser has not recognised the chip and fuel or ignition is inhibited.
Programming resolves it, provided the chip is the correct type for the vehicle.
Are all transponder chips the same?
No, and this is where online key purchases most often go wrong. Different manufacturers and eras use different chip types, and a key that physically fits may carry entirely the wrong chip.
The case looking right tells you nothing about what is inside it.
