What differs between makes

Where key data lives
A module that must be removed and read, or accessible through the diagnostic port. This is the biggest single variable.
Key type
Conventional transponder, flip key, proximity fob or card. Each adds its own steps.
All-keys-lost difficulty
Narrow on some makes, very wide on others. It is why a spare matters more on some vehicles than others.
Security delays
Some manufacturers impose a deliberate waiting period during key learning. Nothing shortens these.

Common questions

Why does the manufacturer matter so much?

Because the immobiliser system does, and every manufacturer approached it differently. Some hold key data in a module that must be removed and read; others allow it through the diagnostic port.

That difference decides how long a job takes, what equipment it needs and what it costs.
