One mobile specialist
Keys, programming, diagnostics and performance — at the vehicle
Keys, immobilisers, diagnostics and engine management rely on increasingly interconnected vehicle electronics, yet drivers are often sent to a locksmith for the key, a dealer for the programming, a garage for the warning light and a tuner for the remap. Autobahn brings these specialist services together in one mobile service.

Car keys
Car key services across Greater Manchester
Most car keys have two halves: the blade that turns in the lock, and the electronics the vehicle must recognise before it will start. Key work covers both, and the key is tested — starting, locking and remote functions — before the job is finished.
Car key replacement
A new key cut and coded when the original is lost, stolen or beyond repair.
Spare car keys
A second key made while one still works — the simplest and cheapest time.
Car key programming
Pairing a key to the immobiliser, remote and keyless functions.
Car key repair
Dead buttons, cracked cases and snapped blades, reusing the original chip where possible.
Broken key extraction
A snapped key removed from a door lock or ignition without damage.
No working key
Lost every key? The car does not need to go to a dealer
When there is no working key at all, there is nothing for the vehicle to trust, so a new key has to be originated rather than copied. That is a bigger job than a spare — but it is still done where the car is parked.
Damage-free entry
The vehicle is opened without forcing locks, doors or window seals.
Recovering the key information
The cut is decoded from the lock and the immobiliser data read from the vehicle — through the diagnostic port or, on some systems, from a module on the bench.
Cutting and programming
A new key is cut and coded, then remote or keyless functions are added.
Removing the lost keys
Where the system supports it, the missing keys are deleted so they can no longer start the car.
Before it becomes urgent
Spare keys, programming and keyless systems
Why one working key matters
Adding a key while one still works lets the vehicle learn the new key alongside the old one. Lose that last key and the job becomes origination — opening, decoding and programming from scratch.
On some makes the difference in time and cost is several-fold. A spare made calmly is the cheapest key you will ever buy.
What programming actually involves
A transponder chip identifies the key to the immobiliser; a remote adds lock and unlock; a smart or proximity key lets the car detect the fob without it being pressed. Each is coded separately.
That is why a key cut by a shop turns in the lock but will not start the engine.
Locked out, day or night
Keys on the seat or in the boot is a lockout, not a lost key — usually the quickest job there is. We open the vehicle without damage at any hour.
If a child or animal is inside and at risk, call 999 first.
Vehicle makes
Key systems differ by make — and we work across all the major ones
The badge does not decide how a key is programmed; the immobiliser architecture does, and it changes between manufacturers and generations. Choose your make for what applies to it, or send the registration and we will identify the system for you.

Where the harder systems are
- BMW and MINI
- CAS, FEM and BDC generations. Later cars often need the body module read on the bench before a key can be added.
- Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, Škoda
- Several immobiliser generations, including MQB-platform vehicles with component protection on key data.
- Ford
- PATS systems, from on-board spare-key procedures on older models to BCM-level programming on later ones.
- Jaguar Land Rover
- High-security keyless systems with key data in the KVM or body control module — among the widest gaps between a spare and all keys lost.
- Mercedes-Benz
- Key and ignition tightly bound, on cars and on Sprinter and Vito vans.
The equipment behind it
Module and bench work needs more than a diagnostic plug-in. Autobahn carries Xhorse Key Tool Plus, Autel IM508S with XP400 Pro and Lonsdor K518 Pro for programming, an Xhorse Dolphin cutter for blades, FoxFlash and Godiag adapters for ECU and bench work, and stable power supply equipment so long procedures are never interrupted.
ECU remapping
ECU remapping and Stage 1 for healthy vehicles
A remap recalibrates fuelling, boost and timing within the hardware already fitted. It is only worth doing on an engine that is in good health, so every remap starts with a diagnostic check. Gains are measured on the vehicle rather than quoted from a table.
ECU remapping
Calibration for cars and vans, matched to how the vehicle is actually used.
Stage 1 remap
A remap on standard hardware for better torque and throttle response. Insurance must be told; we explain what that means.
Diesel & van remapping
Drivability for working vans and diesel cars, including laden and towing use.
ECU programming & cloning
Replacement ECUs coded to the vehicle, and data transferred from a failed unit.
DPF & diagnostics
DPF cleaning, diagnostics, AdBlue and EGR
Send the registration and the exact warning showing. We read the vehicle to find what is causing it, then explain the options and put it right — whether that is a regeneration, a DPF clean or a repair to the part behind the fault.
Car diagnostics
The relevant systems scanned and live data read, so the fault is found before anything is replaced.
DPF cleaning & regeneration
Forced regeneration where the filter is serviceable, and on- or off-vehicle cleaning where it needs more.
DPF diagnostics
Soot load, differential pressure and exhaust temperatures read to find out why the filter blocked.
AdBlue diagnostics & solutions
Countdowns, SCR and NOx sensor faults and heater or pump problems diagnosed and resolved.
EGR diagnostics & solutions
Sticking valves, coolers and carbon build-up behind power loss and warning lights.
DPF regeneration
When a regeneration keeps failing or never finishes, and what that tells us about the vehicle.

Questions people ask before calling
Are you really available 24 hours a day?
Yes. You can call or WhatsApp at any hour, seven days a week.
Urgent jobs — a lockout, a lost key, a vehicle that will not start — are prioritised. Planned work such as a spare key, a remap or a DPF job is booked at a time that suits you.
How is the price worked out, and when do I find out?
From the registration and what has happened. That identifies the key system or engine, which is what the price actually depends on.
The price is confirmed before we attend, and there is no call-out charge on top.
Can you make a key when every key has been lost?
In most cases, yes. The vehicle is opened without damage, the key information is recovered from the lock or the vehicle’s modules, and a new key is cut and programmed at the vehicle.
How involved that is depends on the make and system — the registration tells us before anyone commits.
Why would a locksmith also do remapping and DPF work?
Because keys, immobilisers and engine management rely on increasingly interconnected vehicle electronics. The equipment and knowledge that programme a key are closely related to what reads a module, diagnoses a fault or recalibrates an ECU.
For you it means one visit can cover a key and a warning light, and a no-start gets diagnosed properly whichever system is at fault.
Is a locksmith-made key as good as one from a main dealer?
A correctly specified key, cut to the lock and programmed to the immobiliser, works in exactly the same way. The difference is usually how the job is done: we come to the vehicle, rather than the vehicle being recovered to a dealer and left there.
Do you work on vans and commercial vehicles?
Yes — van keys, van remapping and diesel diagnostics are all regular work. Commercial models often use different key systems from the cars they resemble, so the registration matters even more.
Can you help with DPF, AdBlue or EGR warnings?
Yes. We diagnose DPF warnings and failed regenerations, AdBlue countdowns and SCR faults, and EGR problems at the vehicle, then explain what was found and the options — including DPF cleaning and regeneration.
Send the registration and the exact warning showing, and we can discuss it before anyone attends.
What do I need to have ready?
The registration, where the vehicle is, and — for key work — proof the vehicle is yours, normally the V5C and photo ID. For diagnostics or DPF work, a note of the warning lights and what the vehicle is doing helps a great deal.
