Ford is one of the most common makes on Greater Manchester roads, and one where the right answer varies a lot by model and age. Some older Fords can accept a spare key through an on-board procedure with no equipment at all; later vehicles need proper programming. Autobahn covers both.
The two-key procedure, and its limits
A number of older Fords allow a third key to be added using two already-programmed keys, through a sequence carried out in the vehicle. If your car supports it and you still hold two working keys, that is genuinely the cheapest route and we will say so.
The catch is that it only helps while you already have two. Once you are down to one — which is where most people are when they call — the procedure no longer applies, and the job becomes ordinary key programming. It is a good argument for sorting a spare before you need one.
PATS, and why generation matters
Ford’s immobiliser is called PATS. It has been through several generations, and they are not interchangeable. A procedure that works on one Ford may be entirely wrong for another of similar age, which is why identifying the specific vehicle matters more than recognising the model.
On later vehicles, key operations increasingly involve the body control module rather than a simple diagnostic-port sequence. That is a longer job, and it needs equipment that maintains a stable supply throughout.

Can I programme a Ford spare key myself with two working keys?

What is PATS?

Common on used vans, and usually history rather than fault — a replaced lock somewhere in the vehicle’s past that was never keyed to match.
