The remote is the part of your key that locks and unlocks the car from a distance — separate from the transponder that lets the engine start. That separation is useful, because when only the remote fails you are dealing with a much smaller problem than a dead key.
Two systems in one key
A typical modern key does two independent jobs. The transponder is a passive chip the vehicle interrogates before allowing the engine to run. The remote is an active transmitter with its own battery, sending a coded signal to the central locking.

Rolling codes and losing sync
Remotes do not send the same signal each time. A rolling code changes with every press so a recorded signal cannot simply be replayed. The vehicle accepts codes within a window of what it expects next.
Press a remote enough times out of range — a key rattling in a bag, for instance — and it can advance beyond that window. The remote is fine, the vehicle is fine, but they no longer agree. Re-syncing fixes it, and on some vehicles simply using the key in the ignition does it automatically.

My remote stopped working suddenly. Battery or fault?
Sudden total failure points at the battery or a broken contact. Gradual loss of range over weeks points at a battery on its way out.
If the car still starts normally with the key, the immobiliser side is healthy and only the remote has failed — which is the cheaper problem to have.
What does re-syncing a remote mean?
Remotes and vehicles use a rolling code that changes with each press. If a remote is pressed many times out of range, the two can fall out of step.
Re-syncing brings them back into alignment. Some vehicles do it automatically when the key is used in the ignition; others need a deliberate procedure.
Can you programme a remote I bought separately?
