Volvo Car Keys Manchester

Volvo has changed considerably over the last decade, and the key systems changed with it. An older V40 and a current XC60 are very different jobs, so the model year matters more here than on makes with a slower cadence.

Two eras

Earlier Volvos use key systems that have been well understood for years. The more recent generation, built after the platform overhaul, uses newer architecture with more of the key relationship held in vehicle modules.

Both are workable. What changes is the procedure and how involved all-keys-lost becomes, which is why the registration rather than the model settles what we are dealing with.

Keyless across the range

Proximity keys are common on Volvo, and as with any keyless vehicle the most frequent complaint — the car no longer detects the key — is usually the fob battery rather than a failure.

Volvo also offers a restricted-function key on some models, intended for valet use. If you have several keys that behave differently, that may be why rather than one of them being faulty.

Common questions

One of my Volvo keys does less than the other.

That may be intentional. Some Volvos support a restricted key with limited functions, usually for valet or loan use.

Check the handbook before assuming the key is faulty.

Can you do a Volvo with all keys lost?

It depends on the generation. Later cars are a more involved job than earlier ones, and some need module-level work.
