Smart Key vs Remote Key: What Is the Difference?
A remote key needs you to press a button; a smart or proximity key is detected automatically when it is near the vehicle. The practical difference is that a smart key lets you unlock and start without taking it out of your pocket — and that it involves more systems, so there is more to go wrong and more to code when one is replaced.

How a smart key is detected
The vehicle emits a low-power signal continuously. A valid fob within range replies. Interior antennas then confirm the key is genuinely inside the cabin rather than merely nearby — which is why a key left on the roof may open the car but not always start it.
Because several elements have to agree, a keyless fault can look alarming while being trivial underneath. The overwhelming majority are fob batteries.
What each failure looks like
- Remote key, buttons dead, car still starts — remote side only. Usually a battery, worn contacts or lost sync.
- Smart key not detected, car starts when held against the start button — fob power, not the transponder.
- Either type turns or is present but the engine cranks without firing — immobiliser or transponder.
- Neither key works — check the vehicle battery before assuming both keys failed simultaneously.
Security: the one real difference
Smart keys are exposed to relay attacks, where the signal from a fob near a front door is extended to a receiver beside the car. Nothing is broken and no alarm sounds.
A signal-blocking pouch when the key is indoors prevents it, costs very little, and is the single most effective step a keyless owner can take. Remote keys are not vulnerable in the same way, because they only transmit when pressed.
Can a locksmith programme a smart key?
For most vehicles, yes. A smart key needs more pairing than a remote key — the immobiliser function, remote locking and the proximity detection that lets the car find it — but it is established work with the right equipment.
What decides it is the specific system. Some need a module removed and read on the bench. A small number of the very newest systems are not yet supported outside the manufacturer’s own network, and an honest answer on that comes from the registration before anyone attends.
Why smart key jobs go wrong
- A used fob that has already been locked to another vehicle.
- A fob in the wrong frequency version for the UK market.
- An aftermarket fob with the right casing and the wrong electronics.
- A vehicle battery too weak to hold stable power through programming.
- Every working fob lost, on a system where that makes origination considerably more involved.
