DPF Pressure Sensor Symptoms
The differential pressure sensor tells the vehicle how full the filter is by measuring pressure before and after it. When that sensor or its pipework fails, a healthy filter can look blocked — or a genuinely blocked one can look fine. Both produce confusing symptoms and both are cheaper to fix than the filter that usually gets blamed.
What the sensor does
Two small pipes run from the exhaust to the sensor, one upstream of the filter and one downstream. The difference in pressure between them indicates how restricted the filter is. The vehicle uses that reading to decide when to regenerate.
It is a simple arrangement with a weak point: those pipes run in a hot, dirty environment and can block with soot, crack, or come loose.
How a sensor fault presents
- Regenerations far too often
- The sensor over-reports restriction, so the vehicle keeps trying to clear a filter that is not full.
- No regeneration at all
- Under-reporting. The vehicle sees no need, and the filter genuinely loads up while it does nothing.
- DPF light with a clean filter
- The classic false positive, and the reason people replace filters that were fine.
- Readings that make no sense
- Implausible values at idle, or pressure that does not change with engine speed.
- Fault code naming the sensor
- Which may equally be blocked pipes, a poor connection or wiring rather than the sensor itself.
Why it matters financially
A differential pressure sensor is an inexpensive component. A diesel particulate filter is not. Replacing the filter because the sensor was lying is one of the more expensive mistakes available on a modern diesel.
Live data separates them quickly: comparing what the sensor claims against what the vehicle actually behaves like under load shows whether the reading is credible.
Common questions
Can the pipes just be cleaned?
Often, yes. Soot-blocked pipes are a common cause and cleaning them can restore correct readings without any new parts.
How do I know whether it is the sensor or the filter?
By reading live data rather than guessing. The sensor’s reported values are compared against the vehicle’s actual behaviour.
A code naming the sensor does not confirm the sensor has failed.
Will a faulty sensor cause limp mode?
It can, if the vehicle believes the filter is severely restricted. That is precisely why a false reading is worth ruling out early.
