First, work out which situation you are in

Another working key exists: The straightforward case. A replacement is added alongside it.
This was your only key: All-keys-lost work. Larger, because a key has to be originated from the vehicle itself.
Key is locked inside the car: Not a lost key at all — a lockout, and the smallest job of the three.
Key exists but does nothing: Often a fob battery or a repairable fault rather than a lost key.

People frequently assume the worst case and are relieved to find themselves in a cheaper one. It is worth checking before booking anything.

Before we attend

Check thoroughly one more time — coat pockets, bags, and wherever you last used the vehicle.
Ask whether anyone else in the household has the spare. This resolves a surprising number of calls.
Check insurance and breakdown cover for key protection.
Find the V5C. Entitlement will be checked, and having it ready avoids delay.
Gather every key you own for the vehicle, including any you think are broken.

What a replacement involves

With a working key still available, the vehicle already trusts something, and a replacement is added to it. The blade is cut, the transponder coded to the immobiliser, and the remote or proximity functions paired.

With nothing left, the key has to be originated — the vehicle opened, key information recovered from the locks or modules, and a key created from scratch. That is a different job in scale and cost.

Afterwards: do not end up here twice

Once you have a working key again, have a spare made. Adding a key while one exists costs a fraction of originating one, and it converts any future loss from a serious problem into a minor one.

If it happens at night

Lost keys late at night are routine for a 24/7 service, and a few details make the wait safer and the job simpler.

Wait somewhere lit and safe rather than beside the vehicle if it is in a quiet spot. Tell us where you will be.
If the vehicle is on a motorway hard shoulder or anywhere dangerous, get to safety and contact the emergency services or National Highways first.
Keep your phone charged enough to take a call — we will want to confirm the exact location.
Have the registration and some form of identification to hand. Proof of ownership documents can often be shown as a photo if the originals are at home, but say so when you call.

Recovery, dealer or mobile locksmith?

Breakdown recovery: Moves the vehicle. It does not make a key, so the key problem is still waiting at the other end.
Franchised dealer: Can make a key, but normally needs the vehicle brought to it and works to appointment times.
Mobile auto locksmith: Makes the key where the vehicle is, which is usually where the problem is easiest to solve.

It is worth checking whether a breakdown or insurance policy includes key cover before paying for anything. Some do, and some cover recovery only.

I have lost my only key. What happens now?

A new key is cut and coded to the vehicle where it stands. If you genuinely have nothing left, that is all-keys-lost work and it is a larger job than replacing one of two keys.

Either way the car does not need moving.

Should I call my insurer first?

It is worth two minutes. Some policies include key cover, and some breakdown cover does too.

Ask specifically whether replacement and programming are covered, or only recovery — they are different things and the distinction matters.

My keys were stolen along with my address details.

Say so when you call. Where the vehicle allows it, keys can be re-learned so the stolen ones no longer start it.

Report the theft to the police and your insurer as well.

Will my lost key still work if someone finds it?

Yes, until it is removed from the vehicle’s memory. Replacing a key does not disable the old one on its own.

On many vehicles a missing key can be deleted when the new key is programmed, and if the old key turns up later it can usually be added back. If the key was stolen, or lost with anything showing where the car is kept, ask for it to be deleted.
