The two sound alike but are handled very differently, so saying which one you are in when you get in touch saves time on both sides.
Locked out
The key exists but is on the wrong side of a locked door or boot lid. The job is entry without damage; nothing needs programming.
No working key
The key is lost, stolen, snapped or no longer recognised by the car. A key has to be cut and coded to the vehicle, which is a bigger job.
What a car locksmith does that a general locksmith cannot
A house locksmith works with mechanical locks. A modern car key is only partly mechanical: the blade turns the lock, but a transponder chip or proximity fob must also be accepted by the immobiliser before the engine will run.
That second half needs key-programming equipment connected to the vehicle, and knowledge of how each manufacturer’s system learns a new key. It is why a key copied elsewhere can open the door and still leave the car refusing to start.
Car locksmith, dealer or breakdown cover?
- Breakdown or recovery cover can move a vehicle, but moving it does not produce a key. Check whether your policy includes key or lockout cover before paying anyone.
- A franchised dealer works on its own brand and normally needs the vehicle brought in, which means recovery when there is no working key.
- A car locksmith comes to the vehicle and does the entry, cutting and programming there, across makes, provided the specific vehicle is supported.
What to expect from a genuine car locksmith
- The registration asked for first, because it identifies the key and immobiliser system before anyone travels.
- The price agreed before attendance, not presented once the work is done.
- Proof of entitlement before a key is made: normally the V5C logbook and photo ID in the same name.
- The key tested before the job is closed: starting, locking, unlocking and any remote or keyless functions.

Is a car locksmith the same as an auto locksmith?
Yes. Both describe a locksmith who specialises in vehicles: opening them without damage, and cutting and programming keys the vehicle will accept.
The distinction that matters is from a general or house locksmith, who may not carry key-programming equipment at all.
Do I need to be with the vehicle when you arrive?
Someone entitled to the vehicle needs to be there. Before a key is made we ask for proof of ownership, normally the V5C logbook and photo ID in the same name.
