Auto Locksmith Radcliffe – Car Keys, Diagnostics & Remapping
Radcliffe is a town of older terraced streets and newer estates where a high proportion of cars change hands second-hand. That produces one dominant pattern: vehicles arriving with a single key and no record of a second one ever existing. This page leads on that, because it is the cheapest problem to solve before it becomes the most expensive.

Second-hand cars and single keys
When a car is sold privately or through a small trader, the second key is the thing most likely to go missing in the process. It was lost years earlier, or the previous owner kept it without meaning to, or nobody checked whether it still worked. The new owner finds out when the only key fails.
It is worth one phone call to a previous owner before assuming a key is gone for good, and worth testing a second key you were given rather than putting it in a drawer untested. A key that has quietly stopped working is functionally the same as not having one.
The rest of the local work is ordinary domestic key work: fobs that have given up, keys shut inside, and the occasional immobiliser fault on an older vehicle where the key turns and nothing happens.

How to tell whether a second key is actually working
A spare key can fail silently, and most people only discover it at the worst moment. There are three separate things a key does, and any one of them can stop working while the others carry on.
The blade turns the lock mechanically. The remote locks and unlocks the doors at a distance. The transponder inside tells the immobiliser the key is genuine, which is what lets the engine run. A key can unlock the car perfectly and still not start it, or start it perfectly and no longer lock it remotely.
So test all three, separately, on a day when it does not matter. Unlock with the remote from a few metres away. Then lock the car, unlock it with the blade in the door, and start the engine and let it run for a moment. If any of those fails, you have found it while it is still a small problem.
If the remote has stopped but the car still starts, that is usually a battery or a worn contact rather than programming, and it is frequently a repair. Do not assume a whole new key is needed until someone has checked which of the three functions has actually failed.
Typical Radcliffe calls
- A second-hand car bought with one key and no spare available from the seller.
- A spare key that was handed over at purchase but has never actually been tested.
- Worn keys on older vehicles where the blade no longer turns cleanly in the lock.
- Fobs that only lock the car when held directly against it.

Radcliffe questions
I bought the car with only one key. Is a spare worth doing now?
Yes, and now is the cheapest it will ever be. Adding a key while a working one exists is a comparatively short procedure; creating one with no working key means opening the vehicle, recovering its key data and often removing a module to read on the bench.
The gap between those two jobs is substantial, and it is the whole argument.
The seller gave me a second key but it does not seem to do anything.
Worth checking rather than discarding. It may simply need a battery, or the remote may have lost sync while the electronics and transponder are perfectly good.
Even a key that will not start the car can sometimes still be useful, because the vehicle may recognise its chip. Keep it until someone has looked at it.
