Why a delivery round blocks filters

A diesel particulate filter traps soot and then burns it off. That burn-off, called regeneration, needs sustained exhaust temperature, and sustained temperature needs sustained load. A van doing short drops around a dense district simply never gets there.

What follows is predictable rather than unlucky. Soot accumulates faster than it is removed. The differential pressure across the filter climbs. The vehicle begins attempting regenerations it cannot finish, because each one is interrupted by another short journey or a shutdown. Eventually a warning appears, or the vehicle reduces its own power to protect itself.

Duty cycle or fault? The distinction that matters

The options, and what each one actually achieves

A forced regeneration raises exhaust temperature under controlled conditions to burn off accumulated soot. It works on a filter that is loaded but not saturated, and it is a legitimate first step once the vehicle has been checked.

On-car chemical cleaning treats the filter in place. Off-car cleaning means removing the filter and cleaning it properly on the bench, which is more thorough and takes the vehicle off the road for longer.

Replacement is the last resort, and on a filter loaded with ash rather than soot it is sometimes the only honest answer — ash does not burn off.

Adaptations are reset only after the work is done, never as a substitute for doing it. Clearing a warning light without addressing the filter simply hides the problem until it returns worse.
