Car Key Types Explained: Blade, Transponder, Remote and Proximity

Car keys fall into a handful of types, and the type you have decides what a replacement costs, how long it takes and whether it can be done at the roadside. The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask what the key does: does it turn in a lock, does it press a button, and does the car respond without you touching it at all?

The three jobs a car key does

Before the types themselves, it helps to separate the functions, because a key can do one, two or all three of them and can fail at any of them independently.

The mechanical function is the blade turning in a lock. The electronic security function is the transponder telling the immobiliser that the key is genuine, which is what allows the engine to run. The convenience function is the remote or proximity system locking and unlocking the doors.

That separation explains a lot of confusing symptoms. A key that opens the door but will not start the engine has an electronic problem, not a cutting problem. A key that starts the car perfectly but no longer locks it remotely has a remote problem, not an immobiliser one.

Mechanical key, no electronics

The original type: a cut blade and nothing else. Found on vehicles built before immobilisers became standard, which in the UK means broadly pre-1998 cars, plus some later vans and agricultural or specialist vehicles.

These are the simplest and cheapest keys to replace, because a replacement only has to be cut correctly. There is nothing to programme. If a vehicle takes a key with no plastic head at all, or a head with no electronics inside, this is what you have.

Transponder key

A cut blade with a transponder chip embedded in the head. The chip carries an identity the vehicle checks before it will allow the engine to run, which is the basis of virtually every modern immobiliser.

This is where replacement becomes a two-part job: the blade has to be cut to the lock and the chip has to be programmed to the vehicle. A key that has been cut perfectly but never programmed will turn in the ignition and the engine still will not start — which is exactly what happens to people who buy a key online and have it cut at a shop.

Transponder types are not interchangeable. The chip has to be the correct specification for your vehicle, and a used key that was previously coded to another car often cannot be reused at all.

Remote key and flip or switchblade key

A transponder key with remote central locking added — buttons for lock, unlock and usually the boot. The remote is a separate system from the immobiliser, which is why the two fail independently.

A flip or switchblade key is the same thing in a different housing, with the blade folding into the body at the press of a button. The mechanism is a common failure point: the spring weakens or the pivot wears, and the blade becomes loose or will not lock out straight.

Good news on these: housing damage is frequently repairable. If the electronics and transponder are intact, the internals can often be transferred into a new case and a new blade cut, which is considerably cheaper than a full replacement key.

Remote works, engine will not start

Smart and proximity keys

The current standard on most new cars. The fob stays in your pocket, the car detects it as you approach or as you touch the handle, and the engine starts from a button. Manufacturers give the system different names, but the principle is the same.

These are the most complex keys to replace and the most expensive, because there is more to pair: the immobiliser function, the remote locking, and the proximity detection that lets the car find the fob in the first place. Programming almost always requires the correct equipment and, on some vehicles, a module removed and read on the bench.

They are also the type exposed to relay theft, because the fob is transmitting whenever it is awake rather than only when a button is pressed.

How to tell which one you have

Three questions, in order, will identify almost any key without needing the registration.

  1. Does the car start without you putting a key anywhere — just a button? That is a smart or proximity key.
  2. Does the key have buttons for locking and unlocking? If so it is a remote key, in either a fixed or a flip housing.
  3. Does the key have a plastic head with no buttons? It is either a plain mechanical key or a transponder key. If the vehicle was built after about 1998 it is almost certainly a transponder.

Why the type changes the job

The reason any of this matters is that the type sets the shape of a replacement. A mechanical key needs cutting. A transponder key needs cutting and programming. A proximity fob needs cutting, programming and pairing, and may need module work.

It also sets what happens when all keys are lost. On a simple system a new key can often be originated straightforwardly; on a modern proximity system it may require removing a module, reading it on the bench and preparing the key from the vehicle’s own data.

This is why an honest quote needs the registration rather than the model name. Two cars of the same model and year can use different systems depending on trim and build date, and the difference between them is not small.

Key type questions

Can I just buy a key online and have it cut?

Sometimes, but the failure rate is high enough to be worth warning about. The transponder chip inside has to be the correct type for your vehicle — the case looking right is not enough.

A used key that was previously coded to another vehicle frequently cannot be reprogrammed at all. We are happy to check a listing before you buy rather than after.

Is a flip key better than a fixed one?

Only in terms of pocket space. Mechanically a flip housing has more to go wrong — the spring and pivot wear over years of use — while a fixed key has fewer moving parts.

Neither is more secure. The security lives in the transponder and the vehicle, not the shape of the housing.

My key has a blade hidden inside the fob. What is that for?

It is the emergency blade, and most proximity fobs have one. It opens the driver’s door manually when the car’s battery is flat or the fob has failed.

It is worth knowing where yours is and that it works, because the moment you need it is the moment the car will not respond to anything else.
