Car Key Cloning Explained, and When It Is Not Possible
Cloning copies the identity of an existing key onto a new one, so the car cannot tell them apart. Programming instead teaches the car to accept a new, separate key. Cloning is quicker and does not touch the vehicle’s memory, but it only works on some systems and it always needs a working key to copy from.
Cloning and programming are not the same thing
These two terms get used interchangeably, including by people who should know better, and the difference matters because it changes what is possible.
Programming adds a new key to the vehicle’s own memory. The car learns a new identity and from then on recognises an additional key alongside the ones it already knew. The vehicle’s records change.
Cloning does not involve the vehicle at all. The transponder data from an existing working key is read and written onto a new chip, producing a key the car believes is the original. As far as the vehicle is concerned nothing has been added, because it cannot distinguish the copy from the key it already knew.

When cloning is the sensible choice
There are genuine situations where cloning is the better answer rather than simply the quicker one.
- The vehicle has a limited number of key slots and they are already full. Programming another key would mean overwriting one; a clone does not consume a slot.
- The vehicle’s programming procedure is disproportionately involved for what is wanted — a straightforward spare on a system where adding a key means module work.
- There is a risk that programming would erase existing keys. On systems that re-learn all keys together, a clone avoids the issue entirely.
- Speed matters and the system supports it, for example a working vehicle that needs a second key without downtime.
When cloning is not possible
The limitations are real and they rule cloning out more often than people expect.
The absolute requirement is a working key to copy from. If every key is lost there is nothing to clone, and the job becomes all-keys-lost work where a key must be originated from the vehicle itself.
Beyond that, it depends on the transponder technology. Earlier fixed-code transponders are generally clonable. Many later systems use rolling or cryptographic codes specifically designed so that the chip’s response cannot simply be copied, and on those, cloning is not an option regardless of equipment.

- The key also needs remote or proximity functions, which are paired to the vehicle and are not part of what a clone reproduces.

What a clone does not copy
This trips people up regularly. Cloning copies the transponder identity — the part that satisfies the immobiliser and allows the engine to run. It does not copy everything a modern key does.
Remote central locking is a separate system that must be paired with the vehicle. A cloned key may therefore start the car perfectly and not lock it. On keys where the remote matters, the remote side still has to be programmed even where the transponder side has been cloned.
The mechanical blade is also a separate job. The new key still has to be cut to the vehicle’s locks, and cutting from the vehicle’s original specification produces a better result than copying a blade that has worn.
Is a cloned key as good as a programmed one?
For starting the car, yes — the vehicle cannot tell the difference, which is the entire point. In everyday use a clone behaves exactly like the key it was copied from.
There is one consequence worth understanding. Because the vehicle sees the clone and the original as the same key, it cannot distinguish between them. If a cloned key is later lost, deleting it from the vehicle’s memory also removes the original, because they share an identity. On a programmed key, the lost one can usually be removed while the others continue to work.
That is not a reason to avoid cloning. It is a reason to know which you have, so the right decision can be made if a key goes missing later.
How to find out which applies to your vehicle
The transponder system fitted decides this, and that is determined by make, model, year and sometimes trim rather than by the badge. It is not something to guess at.

Is key cloning legal?
Cloning a key for a vehicle you own or are authorised to have keys made for is entirely legitimate, and it is a normal part of automotive locksmithing.
As with any key work, expect to be asked for evidence the vehicle is yours — normally the V5C and photo ID in the same name. That check protects vehicle owners generally.
Can you clone a key if the original is damaged?
Sometimes. It depends on whether the transponder data can still be read reliably, which is often possible even when the blade or casing has failed.
Keep every piece of a broken key rather than discarding it. A key that looks beyond saving may still carry usable data.
Will a cloned key work with my car’s remote locking?
Not automatically. Cloning reproduces the transponder identity that satisfies the immobiliser; it does not reproduce the remote, which is paired to the vehicle separately.
Where you need remote functions as well, the remote side is programmed in addition to the clone.
Should I choose cloning or programming?
It depends on your vehicle’s system, how many key slots it has, and whether programming risks erasing existing keys.
