What Affects the Cost of DPF Cleaning?

DPF work is not one price because it is not one job. It ranges from a forced regeneration on a filter that is merely loaded, through cleaning, to replacement where the filter has reached the end of its life — and separately, the cost of fixing whatever caused the problem. Diagnosis is what tells you which of those you are buying.

The range of outcomes

Forced regeneration
Where the filter is loaded but serviceable. The least involved outcome.
Cleaning
For filters past the point where the vehicle permits regeneration, but structurally sound.
Replacement
Where the filter has been run to destruction, melted internally, or saturated with ash.
Plus the underlying cause
A faulty EGR, sensor or injector is separate work — and skipping it means paying for the filter twice.

Why diagnosis first saves money

It is tempting to skip straight to cleaning. The problem is that a cleaned filter on an uncorrected fault refills, and you have bought a delay rather than a repair.

Diagnosis costs less than a second clean, and considerably less than a replacement filter fitted for the wrong reason. It also occasionally finds that the filter is fine and a sensor was lying.

  • Has the cause been established, or only the symptom?
  • Is the filter being regenerated, cleaned, or replaced — and why that one?
  • What is the mileage, and is ash accumulation a factor at this age?
  • If it blocks again in three months, what happens?

What each route involves

Diagnosis
Reading soot and ash load, pressure, temperature data and regeneration history. The step that decides everything else.
Forced regeneration
The vehicle burns off soot under controlled conditions. Least work, suits a loaded rather than saturated filter.
On-car cleaning
The filter is treated in place. More time, no removal.
Off-car cleaning
The filter comes off, is cleaned on the bench and refitted. The most labour and the longest off the road.
Repair of the cause
An injector, EGR, sensor or turbo fault. Adds to the job, and is the part that stops it recurring.
Replacement
Where ash loading or damage puts the filter beyond cleaning.

Why the cheapest clean can cost the most

A clean that ignores the reason the filter blocked tends to be paid for twice. If an upstream fault is still producing excess soot, or the vehicle’s journeys never allow regeneration, the filter loads up again and the second visit costs as much as the first.

A motorway run can help a lightly loaded filter on a healthy vehicle, and it is worth trying early. It will not clear ash, will not fix a fault, and does little once the filter is heavily restricted.

Is cleaning cheaper than replacing?

Substantially, where the filter is still serviceable. A replacement filter is a significant expense.

Many blocked filters are structurally fine and simply loaded.

Will additives fix it?

Additives can assist regeneration in some circumstances, but they do not clear a filter that is loaded past the regeneration threshold, and they do not address an underlying fault.

Does diagnosis add to the cost?

It is part of the job rather than an extra, and it is usually what keeps the total down. Knowing whether the filter needs a regeneration, a clean or a repair elsewhere avoids paying for the wrong one.
