What Is a Stage 1 Remap?

Stage 1 is a remap that works entirely within the vehicle’s standard hardware — no changes to the turbo, injectors, intercooler or exhaust. It recalibrates what the engine management already controls: fuelling, boost and ignition timing, within the limits the existing components can safely tolerate.

Why the stages exist

Stage 1
Software only, standard hardware. The appropriate option for the overwhelming majority of road cars.
Stage 2 and beyond
Implies hardware changes — intake, exhaust, intercooler and so on — with software calibrated to match.
The practical point
Stages describe how far the hardware has been changed, not how good the map is.

That last point is worth holding onto. A well-judged Stage 1 on a healthy engine is a better outcome than an aggressive map on a tired one, regardless of what number is attached.

What Stage 1 can and cannot do

It can make meaningful use of the margin manufacturers build in — margin that exists for good reasons: variable fuel quality across markets, long service intervals, extreme climates and warranty exposure.

It cannot change physics. The turbo, injectors, cooling and transmission are unchanged, and a responsible calibration respects their limits. Large claimed gains from software alone on standard hardware describe a risk rather than a service.

Is your vehicle a candidate?

  • Turbocharged engines have genuine scope. Naturally aspirated petrols generally do not.
  • The engine should be mechanically healthy, with no stored faults.
  • Emissions systems — DPF, EGR, SCR — should be working properly before, not after.
  • Service condition matters. Software does not compensate for neglected maintenance.

Who should think twice

  • Drivers of leased or contract-hire vehicles, where modification is frequently prohibited by the agreement.
  • Owners whose vehicle is still under a manufacturer warranty they value.
  • Anyone whose insurer will not accept the modification, or who would rather not declare it — the declaration is not optional.
  • Vehicles whose clutch is already showing signs of wear.
  • Anyone mainly hoping to fix a vehicle that has lost power. That is a fault to diagnose, not a reason to calibrate.

Why nobody should promise you a figure

Two engines of the same model can respond differently depending on condition, fuel quality, service history and small variations in manufacture. The only way to know what a specific vehicle produces is to measure it before and after.

Figures quoted in advance without measurement are estimates presented as promises. A careful approach describes what the calibration changes and how the vehicle should feel, and is honest that the number depends on the vehicle in front of it.

Common questions

Will Stage 1 damage my engine?

A properly judged Stage 1 on a healthy engine should not. A poorly judged one, or one applied to an engine with existing problems, can.

This is why condition assessment comes before calibration.

Does it affect my warranty?

It can. Manufacturer warranties generally exclude damage attributable to modified engine software, and many manufacturers can detect that an ECU has been written to.

Is Stage 1 the same on petrol and diesel?

The principle is the same; the effect is not. Diesels typically gain most in mid-range torque, petrols in response on turbocharged engines.
