Motorway miles or town miles? It changes the answer

A particulate filter cleans itself by burning off trapped soot, and it needs a spell of sustained speed and heat to do it. A vehicle doing regular M6 or M58 journeys gets that without the driver noticing.

So when one of those vehicles shows a DPF warning, the journeys are not the explanation. Something is either producing too much soot or stopping the burn-off from happening, and that is what gets diagnosed.

The short-trip vehicles of Leigh, Atherton and the smaller towns are different. Their filters fill faster than they can clear, and the fix involves the filter, the fault if there is one, and how the vehicle is used.

Two things often missed: additive systems and oil level

Some diesel cars, including a number of Peugeot, Citroën and other models, use a fuel-borne additive to help the filter burn off soot at a lower temperature. The additive is stored in a separate tank. When it runs low the vehicle cannot regenerate properly, and the filter fills up whatever the journeys are like. That needs checking before any cleaning is done.

The other is engine oil. During an active regeneration the engine injects extra fuel to raise the exhaust temperature, and some of that fuel ends up in the oil. A vehicle that repeatedly starts regenerations and never finishes them can show a rising oil level, which dilutes the oil and is a problem in its own right. A rising dipstick on a diesel is worth mentioning when you call.

  • Additive tank level and additive system faults, on vehicles that use one.

  • Differential pressure sensor readings and plausibility.
  • Exhaust gas temperature sensors.
  • EGR, boost and injector faults that increase soot.

Soot load and distance since the last completed regeneration
Shows whether the filter is loading faster than normal.
Differential pressure
How restricted the filter actually is, compared with what the warning suggests.
Regeneration attempts
Whether regenerations are starting and not finishing, or not starting at all.
Additive level (where fitted)
A low or faulty additive system stops the filter burning off soot.
Fault codes across the engine
EGR, boost, injector and sensor faults that point at the real cause.

The options once the cause is known

If the filter is loaded but not saturated and the vehicle is healthy, a forced regeneration under controlled conditions is often enough.

If regeneration will not clear it, the filter can be cleaned on the vehicle or removed and cleaned off the vehicle, which is more thorough and takes longer.

If the filter is full of ash rather than soot, cleaning may not restore it, and a replacement filter is the right answer. The readings show which applies.

Any underlying fault — an additive system, a sensor, an EGR valve, an injector — is identified and the repair options explained alongside the filter work, so the warning does not come straight back.

My car does motorway miles every week. Why is the DPF light on?

Because something other than the journeys is causing it. On a vehicle that gets regular motorway runs, the usual causes are a sensor reporting wrongly, a low additive level on cars that use one, or a fault such as an EGR valve or injector making extra soot.
