Idling is worse than mileage

Drivers often assume that a high-mileage vehicle is hard on a particulate filter. In practice the mileage is rarely the problem — it is what the engine is doing during that time, and a vehicle that covers substantial distance at steady load usually manages its filter well.

Airport work inverts that. A private-hire diesel may cover good mileage in a day, but a large proportion of its running time is spent stationary with the engine idling in a holding area or rank. At idle the engine produces very little load and very little heat, exhaust gas temperature falls well below what regeneration needs, and soot accumulates without any opportunity to burn off.

Worse, an idling vehicle continues producing soot the whole time. The filter is filling while the conditions to clear it are entirely absent, which is the least favourable combination there is.

Interrupted regenerations and what they cost

The second problem with this pattern is interruption. A vehicle that has begun a regeneration and is then switched off partway through has not completed the cycle, and on many vehicles the accumulated soot is not reduced.

For a driver working a rank, that happens constantly — the vehicle starts a cycle on a run to a drop-off and is then shut down while waiting. Repeated interrupted regenerations are recorded by the ECU and are one of the more informative things in a vehicle’s history, because they point directly at usage rather than at a mechanical fault.

Where a vehicle shows repeated aborted cycles and no upstream fault, the honest answer involves how the vehicle is operated. Completing a regeneration when the vehicle indicates one is in progress, rather than switching off, genuinely changes outcomes.

  • Regeneration history, and specifically the ratio of attempted to completed cycles.
  • Exhaust gas temperature during normal operation, to confirm whether conditions are ever reached.
  • Soot load against distance since the last successful regeneration.
  • Upstream fault codes, to rule out a mechanical contributor before blaming usage.
  • Ash loading, which on a high-hours vehicle can be further advanced than the mileage suggests.

Upstream fault codes
Injector, EGR and boost faults, so usage is not blamed for a mechanical problem.

What can be done, and what has to change

Where a mechanical fault is found, it is repaired — usage is not used as an excuse to avoid diagnosis.

Where the filter is loaded, forced regeneration, on-car cleaning or off-car cleaning follow depending on how restricted it is.

Where the pattern is genuinely operational, the recommendation will include changing how the vehicle is run: allowing regenerations to complete, and building in periods of sustained load. That advice is free and it works better than repeat cleaning.

I do high mileage. Why is my filter blocking?
