2021 Mazda 3: Keyless System Malfunction Traced and Cleared

A 2021 Mazda 3 was showing a “Keyless System Malfunction” warning. Autobahn traced it to an aftermarket key previously fitted by another provider, reset the key system and programmed two original Mazda smart keys, which cleared the fault codes before the car went back to its leasing company.

Why the fix was a reset, not another key

The warning was not caused by a failed part but by what had been added before: an aftermarket key the system did not accept properly. Adding one more key on top would not have cleared it, so every stored key was deleted and the car was given two original Mazda smart keys from a clean start.

That also met the owner’s actual deadline: a leased car has to go back with no warning lights and the right number of keys.

Background: keyless warnings after aftermarket keys

The points below are general information about this kind of job. They explain the work; they are not additional details about this particular vehicle.

Some vehicles are sensitive to the key hardware coded to them. A key that works for locking and starting can still leave the keyless system reporting a fault if it does not match what the car expects.

When a key system has to be reset, the keys that stay with the car must all be programmed again, so it is worth gathering every key before the visit.
