Car Key Programming Manchester

Programming is the electronic half of making a car key work. Cutting shapes the blade so it turns in the lock; programming is what makes the vehicle accept the key and start the engine. Autobahn programmes keys at your vehicle across Manchester and Greater Manchester — there is no need to recover the car to a dealer.

Why a cut key still will not start the car

Nearly every car and van built since the late 1990s has an immobiliser. The key carries a transponder chip, and the engine will only run when the vehicle recognises that chip’s identity. Remote central locking, boot release and proximity functions are separate features that also have to be coded in.

This is why a key bought online and cut at a shop often does nothing useful. The blade is right, the electronics are not.

When programming is needed

  • A spare key being added to a vehicle that already has a working one.
  • A replacement after a key has been lost, stolen or damaged beyond repair.
  • Every key lost, where a key has to be created from scratch.
  • A remote that no longer locks or unlocks and needs re-syncing rather than replacing.
  • A second-hand key that has never been paired to your vehicle.
  • A replacement immobiliser, ECU or body control module that must be matched to existing keys.
  • A smart or proximity key the car no longer detects inside the cabin.

How we do it

  1. Identify the vehicle

We confirm the make, model, year and the immobiliser system fitted. The same model can use different systems depending on year and trim, so this decides everything that follows.

  2. Check entitlement

We ask for evidence the vehicle is yours — normally the V5C logbook and photo ID. This is standard practice for key work.

  3. Supply and cut the key

The correct blank and transponder type are matched to the vehicle, then cut to the lock.

  4. Code it to the vehicle

The key is coded to the immobiliser and the remote or proximity functions paired — through the diagnostic port, or on the bench with the module removed.

  5. Test everything

Start, stop, lock, unlock, boot, and your original keys checked to confirm they still work.

Bench and module work

Some vehicles cannot be programmed through the diagnostic socket alone — particularly where all keys are lost, or where immobiliser data sits in a locked module. Those need the module removing, reading on the bench and refitting.

We are equipped for that work, with key programming and diagnostic tooling including Xhorse Key Tool Plus, Autel IM508S with the XP400 Pro and Lonsdor K518 Pro, alongside soldering and bench programming capability and stable power supply equipment for procedures that must not be interrupted. Manufacturer-level software such as VCDS and FORScan is used where it is the right approach for the vehicle.

Not every vehicle and system is supported. We would rather tell you that at the identification stage than attend and fail.

Which vehicles can you programme?

Coverage depends on the make, model, year and system rather than the badge on the bonnet. Send us the registration and we will tell you whether it is supported, what type of key it needs, and how the job would be done.

Vans are covered as well as cars, and commercial vehicles frequently use different immobiliser systems from the passenger models they share a platform with.

Common questions

Can you programme a key I bought online?

Sometimes. Online keys vary a great deal in quality, and the transponder chip inside has to be the correct type for your vehicle — the case looking right is not enough.

If it is the correct specification and has not already been locked to another vehicle, it can usually be programmed. A used key that was previously coded elsewhere often cannot. We are happy to check before you buy.

How long does car key programming take?

It depends entirely on the system. Adding a spare to a vehicle that already has a working key is typically quick; all-keys-lost work, or a job needing a module removed, takes considerably longer.

Some manufacturers also build a deliberate security delay into key learning. Nothing shortens those — they are part of the vehicle’s design.

Is programming the same as key cutting?

No, and a working key needs both. Cutting shapes the blade so it turns in the lock; programming pairs the key’s electronics to the immobiliser.

A key that has been cut perfectly but never programmed will open the door and turn in the ignition, and the engine still will not start.

Will programming a new key wipe my existing ones?

On most vehicles, no. Some systems do require all keys to be re-learned together, which erases any key not physically present.

Where that applies we will say so before starting, and you should bring every key you own to the appointment.

The three things that get programmed

People say ‘programming’ as if it were one operation. In practice a modern key can carry three separate functions, and each is coded in its own way. Knowing which your vehicle uses explains both what the work involves and why prices differ so much between cars.

Transponder (immobiliser)
A passive chip in the key head. The vehicle energises it, reads its identity and only then allows the engine to run. This is the part that makes a cut-but-unprogrammed key useless.
Remote (RKE)
The buttons. A battery-powered radio transmitter for locking, unlocking and boot release, paired separately from the immobiliser.
Proximity / smart key
Two-way communication so the car detects the key without it being presented. Interior antennas confirm the key is inside before allowing start.

OBD programming and bench programming

Most keys are coded through the diagnostic socket: the tool talks to the immobiliser, the vehicle authorises the new key and the data is written. Some systems will not allow that — the data is protected, or the vehicle has no working key to authorise anything — and then the module itself has to come out, be read on the bench and refitted.

Bench work is the reason two cars of the same age can be very different jobs. It needs the module identified correctly, stable power throughout, and equipment that can read and write that specific processor. Autobahn is equipped for both routes, which is why we can give a straight answer rather than declining anything awkward.

Working key present, or no key at all

A working key exists
The vehicle already trusts something. A new key is usually added alongside it, and existing keys keep working.
No working key
Nothing to authorise from, so the key data must be recovered from the vehicle itself. Larger job — see all keys lost.
All keys must be re-learned
Some systems erase every key not present during programming. Where that applies we tell you first, and you should bring every key you own.
Security delay
Certain manufacturers impose a deliberate waiting period during key learning. Nothing shortens it; it is part of the vehicle’s design.

Why a key sometimes will not programme

  • The key is the wrong specification — right shape, wrong transponder type for the vehicle.
  • It is a used key already locked to another vehicle, which many systems will not release.
  • The vehicle has a module or wiring fault, so the fault is on the car side rather than the key.
  • Battery voltage is too low for a safe write — one reason stable power support matters.
  • The vehicle needs manufacturer-level access that only a franchised dealer can provide. We say so rather than experimenting.

Proof of entitlement

Creating a key to a vehicle is exactly the work that should come with checks. Expect to show the V5C and photo ID in the same name. Lease, company, finance and recently bought vehicles are all workable — the paperwork is simply different, so tell us the situation when you call.

Availability, call-out and price

Programming is quoted per vehicle, because the system fitted decides the work. Send the registration at any hour and you will get the price and the method before anyone travels, with no call-out charge.

24/7 availability

Call or WhatsApp at any hour, any day of the week.

Fully qualified

Key programming, diagnostics and ECU work carried out by a qualified technician.

No call-out charge

You are not charged simply for us travelling to the vehicle.

Price confirmed first

The price is agreed before anyone attends, so there are no surprises on arrival.

Areas we cover

Programming happens wherever the vehicle is, through the diagnostic socket or with a module removed and read on the bench. These are the areas it is requested from most.
