What the system is doing
Selective Catalytic Reduction injects a metered amount of urea solution into the exhaust stream. Across the SCR catalyst this converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. It is tightly monitored, because the vehicle has to prove the system is working, not simply that fluid is present.
That monitoring is why a fault escalates. The vehicle is required to respond to a non-functioning SCR system, and the response is a restart inhibit.
Where these faults usually sit
Quality sensor
Reports whether the fluid is genuine AdBlue to specification. Contaminated or incorrect fluid triggers this quickly.
Level sensor
A tank that reads empty when it is not, or full when it is not. Common and often mistaken for a fluid problem.
Tank heater
AdBlue freezes at around -11°C, so the tank is heated. A failed heater typically shows up with the first cold snap.
Dosing injector
Crystallised deposits restrict or block the injector, so the correct dose never reaches the catalyst.
NOx sensors

What is AdBlue for?
