Why codes mislead

A stored code frequently names a component. That naming is regularly misread as an instruction to replace it. In practice a code pointing at a sensor can equally indicate damaged wiring, a poor earth, a connector full of water, low supply voltage, or a genuine fault elsewhere that the sensor is correctly reporting.

Replacing the named part fixes it sometimes. The rest of the time you have spent money and still have the fault.

What diagnosis actually involves

  1. Read everything, not just the engine

    Faults in one system frequently cascade into others. A partial read gives a partial picture.

  2. Look at live data

    What the sensors are reporting in real time, and whether those values are plausible for the conditions.

  3. Establish the circumstances

    Cold or warm, idle or load, wet or dry. Faults that only appear in specific conditions tell you a lot.

  4. Test rather than assume

    Checking supply, earth and signal before condemning a component.

  5. Confirm after repair

    Clearing a code is not the same as fixing the cause. Verification matters.

No, and treating it as one is how people end up replacing parts that were never faulty.

Note when it happens: cold or warm, first start or after a long run, in the wet, under load, at a particular speed, or with a specific accessory in use.

Where a fault only shows under load, live data is captured while those conditions are reproduced rather than guessed at. That is the difference between diagnosis and parts-swapping.
