What load does to a filter

A laden vehicle works harder, which raises exhaust gas temperature — and higher temperature is what regeneration needs. In that respect a working van on the M61 is better placed than an empty car pottering around town.

The other side is soot production. More fuel burned means more particulate output, so the filter is filling faster at the same time as it is clearing better. Which effect dominates depends on the balance of local drops against motorway running, and on whether the engine is in good health.

The practical result is that laden vehicles tend to be fine until something goes marginally wrong, and then decline quickly. A small injector or EGR problem that a light-duty car would tolerate for a long time will block a hard-working van’s filter comparatively fast.

Why a forced regeneration sometimes buys days, not months

On a vehicle with an underlying fault it is a temporary measure and should be described as one. The filter clears, the warning goes, and the same fault refills it. For a working van that means a second period off the road, which is usually more expensive than diagnosing properly the first time.

Off-car cleaning means removing the filter and cleaning it properly on the bench. It is the most thorough option and the one that takes the vehicle off the road longest — which for a working van is the number that matters.

Replacement is the last resort and is the honest answer where ash loading has passed the point that cleaning can address.

Will a forced regeneration fix it permanently?

Only if the filter was loaded and the vehicle is otherwise healthy. In that case it is a proper answer, not a patch.
