DPF: Clean or Replace? How the Decision Is Actually Made
The decision turns on one distinction: soot burns off, ash does not. A filter loaded with soot can usually be cleared by regeneration or cleaning. A filter loaded with ash has reached the end of its usable life, and no amount of cleaning changes that. The readings tell you which you have.
Soot and ash are not the same thing
Almost everything about this decision follows from understanding the difference, and most confusing advice about DPFs comes from conflating the two.
Soot is unburned carbon produced by combustion. It is what the filter is designed to trap, and it is combustible — which is the entire basis of regeneration. Raise the exhaust temperature high enough for long enough, and the trapped soot burns away as gas.
Ash is the incombustible residue left behind, largely from engine oil additives and normal engine wear. It cannot be burned off, because it is what is left after everything burnable has burned. It accumulates permanently over the filter’s life and is never removed by any regeneration.
So a filter has two loads at once, and they behave in opposite ways. Soot comes and goes. Ash only ever increases.
How the decision is actually made
This is not a judgement call made by eye. The vehicle reports most of what is needed.
- Soot load
- The vehicle’s calculated figure. High soot with low ash is the good case — the filter is blocked but recoverable.
- Ash load
- Usually calculated by the ECU over the filter’s life. High ash is what puts a filter beyond cleaning.
- Differential pressure
- Measured across the filter. Shows how restricted it actually is right now, rather than what the warning light says.
- Regeneration history
- Whether cycles are being attempted and aborted, or never started. Those indicate different problems.
- Upstream fault codes
- Whether something is producing excess soot. This decides whether cleaning will last.
- Filter age and mileage
- Context for the ash figure. Ash accumulation is roughly proportional to the oil the engine has consumed.
The options, from least to most invasive
Where the loading is soot rather than ash, there is a ladder of options and it is worth starting at the bottom of it.
Forced regeneration
The vehicle is commanded to raise exhaust temperature under controlled conditions and burn off accumulated soot. Appropriate for a filter that is loaded but not saturated, and the least invasive option. It does nothing for ash.
On-car chemical cleaning
A cleaning agent is introduced to the filter in place, without removing it. Takes longer than a forced regeneration and reaches loading that a regeneration alone will not clear.
Off-car cleaning
The filter is removed and cleaned properly on the bench. The most thorough option, and the one that takes the vehicle off the road longest. This can remove some ash as well as soot, which the first two cannot.
Replacement
Where ash loading has passed what cleaning can address, or the substrate itself is damaged or melted. This is a genuine answer rather than an upsell when the figures support it.
Why cleaning sometimes does not last
This is the complaint people arrive with most often: the filter was cleaned a few months ago and it has blocked again.
There are two explanations, and they need different responses. The first is that an upstream fault is producing far more soot than the filter was designed to handle — a leaking injector, an EGR valve stuck open, a turbo not meeting its boost target, a thermostat keeping the engine below proper operating temperature. Cleaning treated the consequence and left the cause.
The second is that the vehicle’s duty cycle never allows a regeneration to complete. Short journeys, heavy idling and repeatedly switching off partway through a cycle all produce this, and no cleaning changes it.
Either way, the honest answer involves more than cleaning again. If the cause is mechanical it should be repaired; if it is operational you should be told that plainly rather than booked in every few months.
Getting advice on your vehicle’s DPF
You do not need to know which route your filter needs before getting in touch — that is what the readings are for.
Send the registration, the mileage, the warning lights showing and a line about the journeys the vehicle usually does. Questions worth asking whoever does the work
Reasonable questions to put to anyone quoting on a DPF, including us.
- What is the measured soot load and what is the ash load? A quote without these is a guess.
- What is the differential pressure across the filter?
- What does the regeneration history show — attempted and failed, or never attempted?
- Have upstream faults been checked, and what were the findings?
- If cleaning is proposed, what is expected to stop it blocking again?
- Will adaptations be reset, and at what point in the process? They should be reset after the work, never instead of it.
DPF decision questions
How do I know if my filter is full of soot or ash?
The vehicle calculates both and the figures can be read with the right equipment. High soot with low ash means cleaning should work; high ash means the filter is approaching the end of its life.
This is the single reading that decides the whole question, and any quote given without it is guesswork.
Can a long motorway run clear it?
Sometimes, on a lightly loaded filter with a healthy vehicle, because sustained load gives the conditions a regeneration needs. That is why the advice persists.
It will not work on a heavily loaded filter, on one loaded with ash, or where an upstream fault is the cause. It is worth trying early rather than as a last resort.
Is a new filter always the expensive option?
Usually more expensive up front than cleaning, but not always the wrong answer. A filter at the end of its ash life that is cleaned repeatedly costs more over a year than replacing it once.
The figures decide it. That is why they get read before any recommendation is made.
Will clearing the warning light help?
No, and it is worth being clear that clearing a light is not a repair. The filter is in whatever condition it was in, and the warning returns.
Adaptations are reset after the actual work is done, as the final step, not as a substitute for it.
