DPF Cleaning Manchester
Autobahn provides mobile DPF cleaning, DPF diagnostics and DPF regeneration for diesel cars and vans across Manchester and Greater Manchester. We read why the filter has blocked, clear it using the method that suits its condition, and deal with the fault behind it — so the warning light does not simply come back.
Mobile DPF cleaning for cars and vans
A diesel particulate filter traps the soot a diesel engine produces and burns it off at high temperature, a process called regeneration. When that cycle stops keeping up, the filter loads, the warning light appears, and on many vehicles power is restricted until something is done.
Most DPF work starts at the vehicle — at home, at work or on a yard, wherever there is safe space to run the engine and work around it. Diagnosis, forced regeneration and on-car cleaning are carried out there. Where a filter is too heavily loaded for that, off-car cleaning is arranged and explained before anything is agreed. Working vans are scheduled around the working day.
Signs of a blocked DPF
- A DPF warning light, sometimes with a message asking for a longer drive.
- Reduced power, or the vehicle dropping into limp mode.
- Regenerations happening far more often than usual — a raised idle, the cooling fan running after a short trip, a hot smell.
- The engine management light appearing alongside the DPF light.
- Stop-start no longer operating on vehicles that use it.
- Fuel consumption creeping up without an obvious reason.
Common causes of DPF problems
- Short, cold journeys
- The exhaust never stays hot for long enough to complete a regeneration.
- Interrupted regenerations
- Switching off partway through leaves the soot behind, and each aborted attempt makes the next harder.
- Pressure sensor or its pipes
- A faulty differential pressure sensor, or a split or blocked sensor hose, reports the wrong loading — sometimes a blockage that is not there.
- Exhaust temperature sensors
- If the engine management cannot see the temperature it needs, it will not start a regeneration.
- EGR faults
- A sticking EGR valve upsets combustion and sends more soot into the filter.
- Injector, boost or airflow faults
- Poor fuel delivery, a boost leak or an airflow sensor fault all raise soot output.
- Engine running too cool
- A thermostat stuck open keeps the engine below the temperature regeneration relies on.
- Oil specification
- The wrong oil for a DPF-equipped diesel increases ash loading over the filter’s life.
What happens during diagnosis
A DPF warning is the end of a chain, not the start. Before any cleaning is quoted, the vehicle is read to find where that chain broke. Readings and limits vary between manufacturers, so they are interpreted for the specific vehicle rather than against a single rule.
- Soot load
- The engine management’s calculated and measured soot mass — whether the filter is genuinely loaded or being told it is.
- Differential pressure
- Pressure across the filter, checked against the condition of the sensor and its pipes.
- Exhaust gas temperatures
- Whether the vehicle can reach and hold regeneration temperature.
- Regeneration history
- When the last regeneration completed, and how many have been attempted and abandoned.
- Related faults
- EGR behaviour, injector data, boost and airflow readings, and any stored fault codes.
Cleaning vs regeneration
- Forced regeneration
- The engine management is commanded to run a regeneration under controlled conditions. Suits a filter that is loaded but still serviceable.
- On-car cleaning
- A cleaning treatment breaks down soot and deposits with the filter in place, usually followed by a regeneration. Suits moderate loading.
- Off-car cleaning
- The filter is removed and cleaned thoroughly. Used when loading is too heavy for on-car methods.
- Replacement
- Where the filter is ash-saturated, cracked or melted internally, and cleaning cannot recover it.
- Resetting learned values
- Soot and ash values are reset once the filter has actually been cleaned, regenerated or replaced, so the vehicle’s readings match the filter’s real condition.
Soot burns off; ash does not. A soot-loaded filter can usually be cleaned or regenerated, while one full of ash has reached the end of its working life — which is why mileage and service history are part of the conversation.
Why the underlying fault matters
This is the part that decides whether you pay once or repeatedly. A filter that blocked because the car only does short cold journeys needs a different answer from one that blocked because an EGR valve is sticking or an injector is over-fuelling. Both look identical on the dashboard.
Clearing a fault code, or cleaning the filter on its own, removes the symptom. If the cause is still there, the filter loads again. Finding and fixing that cause is what turns a DPF clean into a lasting result.
DPF, AdBlue & EGR diagnostics and solutions
On a modern diesel the particulate filter shares the exhaust with the EGR system and, on many vehicles, AdBlue SCR. Warnings are often connected, so one visit can look at the whole picture: DPF warning lights, failed regenerations, EGR faults, AdBlue countdowns and the fault codes behind them.

What to tell us when you get in touch
- The registration and current mileage.
- Exactly which warning lights or messages are showing.
- Whether the vehicle has lost power or gone into limp mode.
- The journeys it usually does — mostly short local trips, motorway, or loaded van work.
- Any recent work, such as a new sensor, a previous clean or a battery change.
Common questions
Is cleaning better than replacing a DPF?
Usually, where the filter is still serviceable. A replacement filter is a significant expense, and many blocked filters are structurally fine and simply loaded.
Cleaning is not always possible — a filter that has been run to destruction, melted internally or saturated with ash needs replacing.
How long does a DPF stay clean afterwards?
Entirely dependent on whether the cause was addressed. Clean a filter without fixing what was overloading it and the problem returns.
Deal with the cause and normal filter life resumes.
Will cleaning fix my warning light?
If the light was caused by soot loading, generally yes. If it was caused by a faulty sensor, a failing EGR or an injector problem, no — the filter was a symptom.
This is exactly why diagnosis comes first.
Do you diagnose the cause before cleaning?
Yes, always. The same DPF warning can come from short journeys, a faulty pressure sensor, a sticking EGR valve or an injector problem, and each needs a different answer.
Reading the vehicle first tells us whether cleaning, a regeneration or a repair elsewhere is the right starting point — and stops you paying to clean a filter that will block again.
Can a blocked DPF cause limp mode?
Yes. When soot loading or exhaust back pressure passes the limit the engine management allows, many diesels restrict power to protect the engine, turbo and filter.
Limp mode is a sign the problem has moved beyond a routine warning. Driving harder rarely clears it, so it is worth getting the vehicle read.
